Quality that sets the standard: the new DOLL short timber trailer

With the redesign of the short timber trailer, DOLL® is pushing ahead with overhauling and extending its vehicle range. The completely new additions include the drawbar trailer A2K-LE with single tyres and the A2T Shorty central-axle trailer with a particularly low loading height. The 2022 DOLL® short timber trailers boast numerous overhauls, minor improvements and product innovations. Under the motto “Quality that sets the standard”, production optimisations and the implementation of various customer requirements were both on the agenda. According to Stephan Gerber, development manager for timber vehicles at DOLL Fahrzeugbau GmbH: “We approached the redesign from different angles. At the top of the list was a flexible construction-kit principle and consistently incorporating the customer requests that we had uncovered.”

What really sets the new generation of trailers apart is the considerable savings in the dead weight: the combination of the newly designed lightweight frame and high-strength fine-grain steel allow an extra payload of up to 135 kg depending on the model. By widening the track to the maximum permitted external dimension, the optimised chassis boasts significantly improved driving stability.

Higher payload, lower consumption

If it’s mostly easy off-road applications and road transport in the pipeline, the payload can be increased further with the new single-tyre, cranked drawbar trailer A2K-LE: compared to the off-road models with twin tyres (A2K-LZ), the weight savings add up to more than 400 kg. At the same time, the lower rolling resistance reduces the consumption of the towing vehicle considerably. In addition to standard single tyres in the size 385/55 R 22.5, 435/50 versions are also available on small 19.5" rims, which add to the weight savings and ensure an even lower loading height. Compared to trailers with a straight frame, the loading height lowers by up to 120 mm with the drop (models with a “K” in the designation), offering significant advantages in terms of the loading volume, particularly with lightweight timbers.

The advantage of the straight frame (with a “G” in the model designation) is that it offers maximum flexibility. Depending on the length of the timber, the bolted bolsters can be moved easily along the entire length of the frame. Regardless of the frame construction and tyres, the drawbar trailer is available in standardised lengths suitable for different timber lengths.

Optimum manoeuvrability in the tightest spaces

The Shorty central-axle trailer A2T-LZ35, on the other hand, which DOLL® is now offering with an extra-low loading height, is as compact as possible. In the (optional) version with recessed, bolted-in bolsters, the loading edge now only sits around 1000 mm above the ground – ideal for transporting lightweight timbers in bulk. With a dead weight from 2600 kg, the Shorty is a real lightweight.

In general, the central-axle or tandem trailers (identifiable by the “T” in the model designation) feature a newly designed Y-shaped draw pipe. This means that even 90° steering angles to the towing vehicle can be achieved with ease and all lines are routed inside the draw pipe, where they are protected. In the new design, the landing legs have been moved further forwards towards the draw pipe, which makes them easier to handle for both the driver and for service and maintenance work in the workshop.

The central-axle trailers really come into their own in tight spaces. As an alternative to the extremely manoeuvrable Shorty with two pairs of stakes and a loading length of just 3500 mm, DOLL® has the longer A2T-LZ53 model, which can be used to transport two timber piles if you wish.

It’s all in the detail. To make servicing work as simple as possible, all drawbar and central-axle trailers now have bolted bolsters. At DOLL®, even the first bolster on the drop of the K models is bolted. On all models, the lashing points integrated in the frame make it easier for the driver to secure the load, while flush aluminium covers make daily maintenance simpler than ever – just wipe off any leaves or bark. The range of measures also includes new rear end, including full LED lighting with dynamic indicators and aluminium underride guard.

You can order the new short timber trailers right away and DOLL® has made the necessary provisions for this – the most popular models from the DOLL rapid® range are available with a quick turnaround time, such as the straight A2G 2-axle versions.

An extensive portfolio

DOLL® has always had a huge range of timber-transport products, such as superstructures, trailers and semi-trailers for short and long timber, as well as combination vehicles for both types of timber. DOLL® produces the short timber trailers in a platform and (now new) bolster design for timber lengths from two to six metres. The common denominator is a modular construction principle, which ensures that the production quality remains consistently high. As a result, the vehicles cannot just be adapted to different timber lengths but also to different country-specific laws and logistical applications. There is also a huge range of accessories on offer, from work lights to lashing material. The various ranges that DOLL® offers are manufactured at its headquarters in Oppenau, Germany, as well as at the DOLL® Sachsen GmbH site in Mildenau, Germany, which was opened in 2009. The factory in the foothills of the Ore Mountains is now increasingly being developed into a competence centre for all types of timber-transport vehicles.
